Landfill Environmental Services

At this former landfill site in Kentucky, a good vegetative cover has been established to control erosion. STEP monitors and maintains hundreds of acres of old landfills at Fort Campbell.
In order to be safe disposal areas, landfills face environmental challenges of their own. New sites are highly regulated, and engineered to high standards in order to ensure that waste materials are properly contained and contaminants cannot leach into groundwater. When no longer used as an active landfill, these sites are capped and finished so that vegetation is encouraged to grow and the site may be safely reused for another purpose such as a park or training area for military personnel.
Active and closed landfills must also be monitored and maintained to ensure that the materials they contain remain secure. Monitoring methods include visually inspecting the cap for signs of erosion, testing groundwater for evidence of leaching contaminants, and monitoring the methane produced by decomposition of organic materials. STEP can also conduct subsurface testing to find the exact boundaries of extremely old disposal sites where precise records were not kept.
STEP can provide a multitude of environmental and construction services for proposed, existing, and closed landfills. We have been working on these types of projects since the company was founded. Our experience includes:
- landfill design and construction;
- permitting;
- hydrogeologic investigations;
- landfill gas sampling;
- threatened and endangered species surveys; and
- regulatory support.
